Semliki National Park-Uganda
There are about 63 species of mammals, 9 of which are diurnal forest primates like chimpanzees, blue monkey, Uganda safaris vervet monkeys and olive baboon, the night-time primates include pottos and galagos. Forest buffaloes, blue duiker, bee crafts, flying squirrel, pigmy squirrel, little collared fruit bat, water chevrotain and target rat are also found in Semliki Park.
374 species of butterflies have been recognized like 46 species of forest swallow tails and charaxes plus 81 species of large moth, 12 of which are graded as controlled. Local People
Four ethnic groups exist near the park. The Bamba and Balkonjo are seen in the valley and the mountains slopes and are agriculturalists basing on cash crops like cocoa,Kenya safari coffee and food crops like bananas, rice along with potatoes. The Batuku who fill up the rift valley floor, north of the park are pastrolists who base there lives wholly on cattle products which they trade in with their neighbors in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Batwa (pygmies) are hunters and collectors and are an Ituri ethnic group who originally kept surviving on Semliki forest. Their way of living is now varying due to interface with other local communities and the impact of tourism. In 1993, Adventist Development Relief Agency convinced the Batwa and resettled them into local cultural and agricultural life, but the project was unsuccessful. The Batwa at the moment spend part of their new homes and the other in the forest. Tourist Activities
Wilderness in Semliki Park is wonderful in particular for birders, primate, butterfly and butterfly and plant lovers. The tropical forest walk leads one up to the winding River Semliki, the only one of its kind in Africa.
